2007 marks 140 years since the creation of once powerful and one of the biggest
European countries – the Austro-Hungarian Empire, as well as since the adoption of its
Constitution. In 1772 the Empire included a part of the Ukrainian and Polish lands under the
name of the Kingdom (since 1849 the royal land) of Halychyna and Lodomeriya with the
Principalities of Oświęcim and Zatorsk, as well as the Great Principality of Krakow (later -
Halychyna). In order to perform the efficient government of the annexed lands, the relevant
administrative machinery was created in the empire. The upheavals due to the revolution of
1848-1849 in Austria, made it look not only like the constitutional monarchy but caused
further changes of the state system, which in 1867 accomplished as the transformation of
the Empire into Austro-Hungarian dualistic monarchy. The article makes an attempt to
analyze the features of the state system of Austro-Hungary under the1867 Constitution.
Key words: Austro-Hungary, state system, constitution.
